Another simple solution: let the user stretch the slider, changing the step size. By the way, Florian has a very good point that axes are not always linear.2 -

What I see as the biggest problem is a lack of convenient mechanism for reusing variable settings. No surprise most users stick with instances, who wants to set and maintain the values each time.2
